Adei Radio — Water and Energy Minister Mohammad Younus Akhundzada has traveled to Kandahar and inaugurated the initial technical survey for raising the height of the Dahla Dam in the province’s Shah Wali Kot District.
According to a statement released Sunday by the Water and Energy Ministry, the dam is planned to be raised by about 13 meters following an order from the IEA leadership.
The ministry said preliminary technical work on the project has begun, and a new design for the dam will be prepared after the survey is completed.
Officials say raising the dam is expected to help address water shortages in Kandahar and reduce the impact of recurring drought in the region.
The Dahla Dam is considered a key infrastructure project for Kandahar, providing irrigation water to around seven districts of the province.
The reservoir area and surrounding natural landscape are also a popular destination for visitors, with many people traveling to the area for recreation during holidays.
