Adei Radio — The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed grave concern following reports of an airstrike in Kabul that allegedly struck the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital on the evening of March 16.

UNAMA noted, the strike, reported to have occurred at around 9 p.m., impacted the facility, which provides treatment for individuals struggling with drug addiction. According to UNAMA, Initial reports indicate that dozens of people were killed or injured in the incident.

In a statement, UNAMA extended its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a swift recovery to those injured.

The mission stated that under international law, all parties to a conflict are obligated to respect and protect the sick and wounded, as well as medical personnel, hospitals, and ambulances. It stressed that attacks on healthcare facilities and civilian infrastructure are strictly prohibited.

UNAMA also highlighted the broader toll of ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, noting that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. In line with its United Nations Security Council mandate, the mission reported that since February 26 — prior to the March 16 incident — it has documented at least 76 civilian deaths and 213 injuries across Afghanistan linked to hostilities.

Reiterating its position, UNAMA called for immediate de-escalation, a ceasefire, and full compliance by all parties with international legal obligations to ensure the protection of civilians.

However, Pakistan’s information ministry denied targeting drug rehabilitation center in an airstrike conducted by Pakistani Air Force on Monday night in Kabul.
