Adei Radio — Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said an escalation in hostilities between Afghanistan and Pakistan has affected multiple health facilities in Afghanistan and raised serious concerns about civilian safety and access to care.
Tedros said at least six health facilities have reportedly
been impacted across Afghanistan since late February. He added that an
overnight strike on the Omid drug treatment center in Kabul, managed by the
Taliban’s Interior Ministry, reportedly killed more than 400 people and injured
at least 250 others receiving treatment for substance use disorders.
World Health Organization (WHO) said it is working to verify
the reported incidents.
Tedros warned that the intensifying conflict is placing
additional strain on the country’s health system and increasing risks to the
health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
He called on all parties to de-escalate tensions and
prioritize peace and the protection of health services.
